2016 Grades R–12 Practical Assessment Tasks. The Practical Assessment Task -PAT is a software development project in which you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your software development and programming skills.
What is the purpose of the PAT?
• To work extensively with content knowledge to improve your programming and organizational
skills
• To implement higher-order and critical thinking skills, formulate strategies and solve
problems on different levels
To develop good working practices to prepare you for the real world, like
- Time management
- Thorough research and planning
- Perseverance to achieve and excel in what you set out in your plan
- Presentation and marketing of your product
PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASKS -PATS GENERAL GUIDELINES
Who Should Take the Practical Assessment Task -PATS?
A Practical Assessment Task is a compulsory component of the final promotion mark for all candidates registered for the following National Senior Certificate subjects:
- Agriculture: Agricultural Management Practices and Agricultural Technology;
- Arts: Dance Studies, Design, Dramatic Arts, Music and Visual Arts;
- Languages: Oral mark;
- Technology: Civil Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, and Engineering Graphics and Design;
- Life Orientation;
- Computer Sciences: Computer Applications Technology and Information Technology; and
- Services: consumer studies, hospitality studies, and tourism.
The Practical Assessment Task must count 25% of the end-of-year examination mark.
The PAT is divided into three phases, as explained below:
- Phase 1: Outlines the project task and solution and provides the relevant research methods
- Phase 2: A possible design of the project
- Phase 3: A working, fully documented Delphi/Java program that implements the planned solution
Practical Assessment Tasks: -PATS Submission deadline
Specific dates will be determined by your subject educator.
Phase 1: Not later than one week before the end of Term 1
Phase 2: Not later than one week before the end of Term 2
Phase 3: Not later than three weeks before the start of the Grade 12 final examination
NOTE: You will be required to demonstrate and discuss your program during an interview
