How to Apply for SASSA Online
- Open your internet browser
- Search for https://srd.sassa.gov.za/
- You will then have to submit your ID number and mobile number
- Once you have done that, click the ‘send sms’ button
- Insert the One Time Pin (OTP) number and click ‘verify pin’
- Continue to step 2: Agree To Terms and Conditions
You will need to supply SASSA with the following information in order for your application to be considered.
- Identity Number or Department of Home Affairs Refugee permit number
- Name and Surname as captured in the Identity Document
- Gender and Disability
- Contact details – Cell phone number
- Residential Address

This SASSA website also provides applicants with the option of doing a SASSA grant status check. This can be done by visiting this page and clicking on ‘Track My Application’. You then need to follow the prompts and you will then be given information on which stage your application is at.
SASSA was created in 2005 to distribute social grants on behalf of the Department of Social Development. This was done to improve the standards of living in the country and are given to people who are vulnerable to poverty and/or in need of support from the government, such as the elderly, people living with disabilities, and those with young children.
