The National Merit Scholarship competition is open to all students enrolled in grades 6-8 in the United States.

Students who want to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their junior year of high school.
