How to Apply for UFS NSFAS Transport Allowance
Below is an elaborate guide detailing the steps involved in applying for NSFAS transport allowance at the University of the Free State:
- Before starting your application, ensure you have all required documents, including proof of residence, identification, and any other relevant paperwork specified by NSFAS
- Visit www.ufs.ac.za via the link below
- Complete the NSFAS Application Form
- Within the application form, indicate your need for transportation assistance by selecting the relevant options or checkboxes provided
- Upload Supporting Documents
- Submit Application by Deadline (Late submissions may result in delays or rejection of your application)
- Await Notification (After submitting your application, await communication from NSFAS regarding the status of your application)

Who Qualifies For the Transport Allowance
Students who opt to make their accommodation arrangements which include staying at home, staying with immediate family members, or staying at nonaccredited accommodation qualify for UFS NSFAS transport allowance.
UFS Transport Allowance Application Process
Students can apply online for the transport allowance on their Student-Self Service Portal. Applications open on 28 February and close 15 March.
General NSFAS Eligibility Criteria
- Students from families with a combined household income of not more than R350 000 (three hundred and fifty thousand rands) per annum, register at TVET colleges and universities for the first time.
- Students returning to TVET colleges and universities to complete or continue their first undergraduate qualification. Only select postgraduate qualifications are funded, please refer to the website for the full list.
- Students from families with a combined household income of up to R122 000 (one hundred and twenty-two thousand rands) return to TVET colleges and universities after a gap year or two to complete their first undergraduate qualification.
- Students from families who are recipients of child-support grants or disability grants administered through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will automatically qualify for NSFAS funding.
- Orphans will automatically qualify for NSFAS funding, provided that there is confirmation of their status.

NOTES: If you applied for a transport allowance, you would not
qualify for a private accommodation allowance. Therefore, you should not complete a transport application form if you will need a private accommodation allowance.
