IMF Job Vacancy Application Details
The IMF is seeking a Chief Economist who will work with the management team, and other key stakeholders to provide strong intellectual and strategic leadership to our membership.
The Chief Economist works under the guidance of the Managing Director, the First Deputy Managing Director, and her three deputies. The incumbent provides intellectual leadership, strategic vision, team management and oversight of the work of the staff of the department, with a view to constantly improving the quality of the Fund’s work. As part of the institution’s senior leadership team, the incumbent supports the top management of the IMF to develop and implement the IMF’s overall strategy.
Duties:
RES plays a lead role, and is responsible for, conducting forward-looking strategic research and analysis on the stability of the international monetary and financial system, with a strong emphasis on macro-financial issues. The department also (i) carries out policy-oriented research and analysis that supports the IMF’s work in individual countries, including advanced economies, emerging markets, and low-income countries; (ii) prepares the World Economic Outlook Report and global macroeconomic projections, as well as contributions to the G-20, G-7, and other international fora; (iii) plays a central role in multilateral surveillance activities, preparing the External Sector Report and supporting the IMF’s crisis prevention work; (iv) supports area departments with bilateral surveillance and technical assistance; (v) contributes to public outreach on issues under the mandate of the IMF, as well as seminars and conferences in the area of macroeconomics, international trade and finance; and (vi) maintains close contacts between the Fund and the academic community and other research organizations, as well as with other international organizations.
- Reporting to the Managing Director, the Economic Counsellor and Director of RES acts as a primary interlocutor and representative of the department with external and internal parties; communicates management’s priorities to department staff and department needs to management.
- Contributes to the Fund’s strategic planning process, leads and oversees the department’s strategic planning process.
- Selects and develops a strong departmental leadership team, and cultivates their personal commitment and collective accountability for the department’s work, reputation, and entire staff.
- Leads the department to produce influential research to be used by policymakers, including in new core areas of the macroeconomic effects of climate change, as well as the global pandemic response.
Qualifications:
An advanced degree in economics, and at least 20 years of relevant technical and managerial experience.

- be a recognized thought leader with intellectual leadership in macroeconomic and structural policy issues, evidenced by a strong publication history and active interest in international economics and macro-financial issues;
- have strong interpersonal, negotiating, and influencing skills, as well as experience in interaction with senior officials of member countries;
- have the ability to provide clear direction to enable others to achieve mission critical priorities, lead and champion innovation and change to keep pace with the external environment, and conceptualize and turn ideas into action;
- have a demonstrated track record in strategic thinking, staff management, teamwork and consensus-building, planning, organizing, and delegating work across diverse activities;have sound policy judgment and proven capacity for problem solving;
- have excellent communication skills; andhave broad exposure to the Fund’s work and policy issues.
