About the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC)
The National Disaster Management Center is responsible for the mitigation and management of local and national disasters. It accomplishes this task through establishing effective preventative measures and response systems. The division works in conjunction with the Department of Cooperative Governance (DCOG). Its primary objective is to promote coordination between different parties during disaster management.
Part of the responsibilities of the NDMC is to encourage the training and education of disaster management across the country. One of the ways the center has achieved this is through the provision of bursary funds for students specializing in this sector. This financial aid has greatly increased disaster management capacity building since its introduction.
The National Disaster Management Centre External Bursary 2021
The National Disaster Management Center offers a bursary fund to eligible students living and studying in South Africa. This bursary covers applicants studying National Disaster Management or a related field in the industry. Funds from the program will cover registration and tuition, as well as book and research allowances where applicable. Books allowances are capped at R5, 500, while research allowances are capped at R11, 000.
Applicants will be expected to sign a bursary contract with the NDMC before receiving financial aid. Successful candidates will be contacted on or before January 31st, 2021. Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted. This bursary is also not available to students taking PhD courses.
NDMC Bursary Application and Requirements
Applicants for the NDMC bursary must meet a minimum set of requirements to be considered for financial aid. Failure to meet these criteria will lead to the automatic disqualification of one’s application. Each candidate should:
- Be a South African citizen
- Have applied and been accepted to study Disaster Management (or a related course in this field) in a South African public institution
- Show proof of an income lower than R350, 000 per annum
- Have applied for an undergraduate or postgraduate course in this field (PhD courses are not included in the bursary)
Students studying Disaster (Risk) Management will be given first priority for this financial aid.
NDMC Bursary Application Process
Applications should be submitted on or before the deadline, together with the following documents:
- A motivation letter stating why you deserve the bursary
- A brief Curriculum Vitae
- A copy of your recent academic results, showing a passing grade of 50% or above in all major subjects
- A copy of an admission or acceptance letter from the public university of your choice (or proof of application)
- A certified copy of your South African ID
- Documents showing proof of residence
- Documents showing proof of income
- A document disclosing other sources of financial support where applicable
