Who is eligible to apply for National Merit Scholarship Competition?
The National Merit Scholarship competition is open to all students enrolled in grades 6-8 in the United States.
Students who want to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their junior year of high school. Based on their test scores, students are selected as semifinalists and are notified in September of their senior year.

A variety of information is available for NMSC to evaluate: The Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curriculum and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay.
