NSFAS Student Funding Finally Confirmed

Updated Information about NSFAS Student Funding

First time and returning students that are funded by NSFAS can finally stop stressing over funding. NSFAS experienced a huge decline in 2020 regarding money recovered for registration fees.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) confirms that they will be funding all qualifying students.

Following the student protects that have been taking place over the last two week, all across South Africa over registration and historic debt, NSFAS says they can officially fund all qualifying students and they will be able to register.

At the beginning of the academic year NSFAS was struggling with funds but, things are finally looking up for them. Kagisha Mamabolo, NAFAS spokesperson says:

All students that qualify for NSFAS and have admission at a university and TVET college will be allowed to register without paying registration fee, and all their fees will be settled.

This includes first time students and returning NSFAS students.

NSFAS says that in 2019 they recovered around R680 million that was used for students registration, but in 2020 they experienced a massive decline only recovering R550 million for student registration. NSFAS is begging for their previous beneficiaries to pay them so that they can continue funding needy students.

They are said to be working with the Department of Higher Education to fund students that fall outside of the R350 000 household income bracket, because it is their responsibility to fund as many financially needy students as possible. So missing middle students might soon have a solution for their continuing funding issue

NSFAS reported that over the last 27 years, since 1994, they have funded 3.7 million students and they hope that they will be in the position to provide funding for financially needy student for many more years.
